Our History
In 1947 the Klein Karoo Co-operative was established in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. With access to well-developed seed cleaning lines in both Oudtshoorn and Brits, the business expanded into vegetable seed production in 1990. In 2003, Klein Karoo Seed Marketing, a subsidiary of the Klein Karoo Co-operative was founded.
As exclusive distribution and marketing agreements of hybrid vegetable seed with recognized international seed companies were secured, Klein Karoo Co-operative took the business decision to sell 100% of its shares in Klein Karoo Seed Marketing to Zaad Holdings in November 2013.
In October 2018, the vegetable seed division within Klein Karoo Seed Marketing was separated into a new entity (Nuvance) to ensure specific and focused attention to this business and market segment.
In July 2020, Nuvance was acquired by Bejo, an internationally leading company specialized in the breeding, production, processing and sales of quality vegetable seeds. With an assortment of some 50 crops and more than 1,200 varieties, Bejo offers a complete programme for all markets and a wide range of climates. Research and Development
Through our partnership with Bejo who continuously invests in research, we never stop actively exploring all new technologies. The more we learn about plants, right down to the DNA level, the more able we are to develop new varieties faster and more accurately than ever. This means varieties with even better growth characteristics that are well suited to sustainable farming. And it results in crops that meet growers’ needs and vegetables that appeal to consumers. All registered and commercially available Bejo varieties were obtained by using traditional plant breeding methods. Bejo has no genetically modified varieties available for commercial use.
